General William Irvine

               General William Irvine fought in the Revolutionary War. He was sent by the new United States government as a military escort to Andrew Ellicott, a government surveyor. They were to survey land in northwest Pennsylvania that would be given to soldiers as payment for their service in the Revolutionary War. These lands were called “donation lands”. General Irvine owned many acres of land in the Brokenstraw - Allegheny River area. He never lived on these lands.
